Who Are The Real Fascists?

fas·cism | \ˈfa-ˌshi-zəm also ˈfa-ˌsi-\
Definition of fascism
1 often capitalized : a political philosophy, movement, or regime (such as that of the Fascisti) that exalts nation and often race above the individual and that stands for a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition
2 : a tendency toward or actual exercise of strong autocratic or dictatorial control

The people who think Donald Trump is a fascist generally do not know what they are talking about, because they cannot define fascism.  They tend to accuse Trump of racism and then conflate racism and fascism. Alternatively, they call Trump a dictator and then conflate that with fascism. There is slim evidence he is either racist or dictatorial, and in any case, there is more to fascism than those two factors.

On the other hand, no one suspects the Regressive Left of being fascist because fascism has historically been considered a right-wing phenomenon, a perception reinforced by leftist rhetoric. Is this a false perspective? Are there possibly stealth fascists lurking on the Left?

There are actually four main elements of “fascism” according to Merriam Webster (and Wikipedia), so let’s look at them one by one and compare Trumpism with Regressive Leftism.

  1. Emphasis on nation and race
Well obviously Trump puts an emphasis on America, from the campaign slogan “Make America Great Again” (MAGA) to his oft-repeated strategy/mantra “America First.” No argument there.  However the charge of racism is overblown. One 50 year old lawsuit and a few remarks people point to are only convincing to SJWs, not most Americans.  His opposition to open borders is not credibly based on racism (or “Islamophobia”).
The Regressive Left cares nothing about the US as a nation, but they do care a heck of a lot about racism and other tribalisms. Their level of hate speech rhetoric toward the identity groups they do not favor, and members of their own groups who disagree with them, is only matched by actual Nazis and the KKK in American history.
    Verdict: Both resemble fascism.
  2. Autocratic government headed by dictator
Trump is accused of being a dictator often, and, like George W. Bush famously said, he might find his life easier if he were. But the fact is he has the normal powers of the normal president. He is actually less dictatorial than Barack Obama who issued dozens of fiats in the form of Executive Orders several of which restricted the rights of citizens, including the due process human rights of men. While Trump autocratically demands loyalty from the Executive Branch, he has done nothing so far to restrict the rights of citizens.
The Regressive Left on the other hand would love to have dictatorial powers to implement their autocratic program. They want to dictate everything down to what people can think or say, and they would like nothing better to have the power of the state, including the police and armed forces, to assist them.
Verdict: The Regressive Left resembles fascism.
  3. Severe economic and social regimentation
Trump has never expressed an interest in regulating society or the economy. In fact he is in favor of lifting regulations on individuals and businesses.
Meanwhile, the imposition of their cherished “Equity” on society by the Regressive Left would result in economic and social regimentation unparalleled in human history.
Verdict: The Regressive Left resembles fascism.
  4. Forcible suppression of opposition
Trump does not do this (so far).
The Regressive Left uses all forces in its control to suppress opposition, including the use of violence to deprive alternative thinkers with a platform for their free speech rights.  They also use intimidation (fear of force) and plain old fear of shaming, firing, etc… to harass and silence their opponents and get their way. Antifa is the functional equivalent of Adolph Hitler’s Brown Shirts, with the same mission.
Verdict: The Regressive Left resembles fascism.

So here is the final scorecard.  It is pretty obvious who fits the definition of fascism. They are four for four.

Emphasis SJW Left Trump
Nation/Race Yes Yes
Autocratic/Dictator Yes No
Regimentation Yes No
Forcible Suppression Yes No
